Morris County's independent community newsletter.

Happy Friday, Morris County.

School budget vote is coming up, we'll remind you. First: the weekend has genuinely good things on the calendar. Let's get into it.

📍 WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND

Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area, Open Daily
Pyramid Mountain (472A Boonton Ave, Montville) is one of Morris County's best day hikes and it's at its best in mid-April, no summer heat, trails are open, and the glacial erratics (Bear Rock and Tripod Rock) are dramatically lit on clear spring days. The main loop to Tripod Rock is about 3.5 miles round trip, moderate elevation, family-friendly. Free. Open dawn to dusk. morrisparks.net for trail maps.

Grow It Green Winter Farmers Market, Sundays through April
Grow It Green Morristown's Winter Farmers Market runs on Sundays through April and remains one of the easiest ways to buy local produce, pantry goods, and prepared foods without waiting for the full summer market season. Their 2025 impact report says the market drew an average of 900 people a week. If you've been out of the habit all winter, this is a good weekend to get back.

Great Swamp: Spring Migration Peak Week
The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is at its best right now, peak spring bird migration typically runs mid-April through early May in northern NJ. The Wildlife Observation Center (36 Long Hill Rd, Chatham Township) has elevated boardwalks and enclosed photography hides. Over 244 bird species recorded on site. Free, open dawn to dusk. No dogs in the wildlife management area. greatswamp.org for access maps.

🏗️ WHAT'S NEW

Morris County Library: Spring Programming + Digital Access
The Morris County Library System (headquarters at 30 E. Hanover Ave, Whippany) remains one of the county's quieter value plays. Beyond in-person programming, your library card gets you access to Libby (ebooks and audiobooks), Kanopy (free film streaming), and Hoopla. If you haven't used the system recently, spring is a good time to put it back into rotation.

📋 NEED TO KNOW

School Budget Vote, Tuesday, April 21
Reminder: New Jersey's April school election lands on Tuesday, April 21 in 2026, the third Tuesday of the month. This is the election most Morris County residents skip. It's also the election where your vote has the most direct impact on your property taxes and local school funding.

  • Find your polling location at njelectionresults.com

  • Your district's ballot proposal will be on their website, search your town plus school budget vote 2026

  • Polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In many Morris County districts, the official budget stays under the levy cap and doesn't require a vote. But several districts do put proposals to voters. Takes 10 minutes. Matters more than the presidential primary.

Your district's budget page is the one to check
If your town has a ballot question this cycle, the cleanest way to get the exact number is still your district website. Search your town name plus school budget vote 2026 and read the district's own summary before Tuesday.

⭐ LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

Morristown Green: The Living Room of Morris County

Most downtowns have a park. Few have a park that genuinely functions as the social center of a county.

Morristown Green has been that for more than 200 years. It was a training ground for the Continental Army in 1776. It hosted a farmers' market when Morristown was a farming town. It was the site of major civic events through the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, in spring and summer, it's the gathering point for Morristown's Saturday farmers' market, outdoor concerts, food truck events, and just about every community moment the downtown has.

What's happening this spring: the County has confirmed the America 250 celebration series will include events on and around the Green through the summer. The Saturday farmers' market runs through November. Morristown's restaurant row immediately adjacent has expanded over the past two years, several new independent restaurants have opened on South Street and Elm Street within a 5-minute walk of the Green.

If you work in or near Morristown but haven't made a habit of the Saturday market, spring is the right time to start. morristowngreen.com for the weekly schedule.
